Yorkshire road race series – Sponsored by Dirtwheels RC. 1/4/2012

April 1st saw the first round of the Yorkshire Road Race Series take place on the Pennypot Lane circuit near Harrogate. All four members of the RST TRIGON team were present, and hoping to use the race as yet another opportunity to gain some top results and practice riding together as a team. The circuit started with a long climb, then quickly descended into a small village, after which followed another fairly technical descent. Then was the long straight drag along Pennypot lane, which was also the only real section of the course where the wind became a factor

The race would be 120km, and with riders present from Node 4, Metaltek, Cycle Premier and Sportscover amongst others, it was going to be fast and have a large element of team tactics.

Around 20 riders had a small lead, and it featured all of the main players from all teams, including all four RST riders. This was the situation for the next three laps, the break riding steadily with the bunch chasing steadily behind it. With three laps left to go however, the race was all together again. It was back to square one with attacks coming thick and fast. Eventually, Node 4′s Kieran Frend attacked at the foot of the climb and RST rider Matt followed with 2 other riders in a break that would be gradually joined by more and more riders, but ultimately stay away until the finish.

Entering into the final lap the break was clear of the main bunch, and had swelled to around 12 riders. Significantly however it contained Matt, Gunnar and Dan who with strength in numbers had the advantage along with Node 4 who also had multiple riders in the break. Sure enough as the race was in the final stages, it was Frend who was sent off the front for Node 4, followed closely by Matt. These two would stay clear all the way to the finish, with Frend getting the better of Matt along the back section of the course. After these two had crossed the line it was not long before it was revealed what had happened to the remainder of the break. Attacks in the closing stages had left the field splintered and Gunnar had taken full advantage of this to pull away and finish in 4th place. Dan was in the points finishing 18th, followed by Tom only a little further back in the main field.

So to conclude: yet another successful race for RST TRIGON. The team have already demonstrated they are capable of taking it to some of the top teams in the country, and it would seem that as April begins and the season gets into full swing the riders have all stepped up to the challenge and will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with as the year progresses.
