Joey stage 2

Stage from Hell

Stage one of the Isle of Man Junior Tour which is known as the queens stage was a dismal affair run off in atrocious conditions. Most riders donned full battle gear including thick neoprene gloves, overshoes and rain capes and those of them that didn’t were probably amongst the ten riders that ended up in hospital with signs of hypothermia.

In a repeat of last years stage Joey Walker got himself into the early break after team mates Nathan Draper and Joey Fry had tried their hand earlier. Once settled into the break Joey worked hard with his breakaway companions whilst Draper and Fry covered any moves in the bunch. With around three laps to go and just as the wether was at its worse Charlie Quaterman of Zappi’s Racing Team decided to make what looked like a move too early but after only one lap he had gained a minute lead. He didn’t pull out the same kind of gap for the remaining two laps but finished strongly to secure a gap of 1.12 at the finish over second placed rider Gabriel Evans of Catford CC. Walker came in 1;27 down in 5th place leaving himself a lot of work to do in Sundays final stage if he had any hopes of the overall win or a podium
