RST make big impact at Bedford 3-day – Women’s Team Series

Although RST Women’s Racing Team were down from 6 to 4 riders for this event (losing Abby-Mae and Lauren to illness) the 3 day, 5 stage Bedford event couldn’t have got off to a better start for our junior girls.

With one of the strongest fields outside of a National Series event Grace Garner got RST off to the perfect start on stage 1 winning the mass uphill bunch kick with 2 bike lengths to spare. The team backed up well with Lizzie Holden finishing fourth and Annasley Park fourteenth with Amy Gornall safely in the bunch. Grace led all competitions at this point: Yellow, points, queen of the mountains and young rider!

Stage 2 was a short 7.5km Team Time Trial. RST were always up against it with 4 junior riders but the girls put in a solid performance to keep them in the race finishing fourth losing only 13 seconds to the winning team Epic Scott.

The afternoon’s 50mile rolling stage 3 was a great team effort. With clear instructions to have a rider in any dangerous looking moves Annasley put herself in the break of the race with 20 miles left to race. With all the major teams represented the 9 riders including, eventual Nicola Juniper, finished nearly 2 minutes up on the main field. Annasley finished 8th and took over the white jersey of leading junior and was now 5th on GC. Grace took the bunch kick for 10th on the stage with Lizzie coming in 18th. Amy unfortunately suffered a puncture with 15 miles to go and didn’t regain contact with the main bunch. RST were now leading 3 of the 4 competitions; young rider, points and queen of the mountains.

The final day was another split stage starting with an individual time trial over the same 7.5km course as the TTT. This stage would prove to be decisive for the final GC as Nicola Juniper took over the Yellow jersey from Anna Christian. Grace finished a fine 8th at 19 seconds from winner Molly Weaver, Annasley 15th at 28 seconds (easily maintaining her lead in the young rider category), Lizzie 17th at 32 seconds and Amy 39th at 52 seconds.

The 5th and final stage was a rolling 50 mile stage over a 6 lap course with a tough finish hill. An aggressive stage was well controlled by Junipa and her team but a greatly reduced bunch saw the ever impressive Garner win with ease with Lizzie 5th and Annasley 10th. This also saw Annasley move to a very impressive 5th overall along with the white young riders jersey. Grace also sealed wins in the queen of the mountains and points competitions.

Team manager Rob Holden said “Although the headlines will show strong results for the girls the most impressive thing to come from this race for me was how they’re gelling as a group. That often takes time to get the confidence to do that but they’ll be able to take what they’ve learnt about themselves this weekend into the next phase of their seasons.”
