Mixed fortunes at Darley Moor event one

This week saw the senior A team and Junior and youth riders racing at the notoriously breezy Darley Moor motor racing circuit.

 E123 race

With there being a large number of entries including teams such as Herbalife, Hope factory racing and Raleigh, which included national crit champ Graham Briggs, the team knew this wasn’t going to be an easy race.

This didn’t stop our A team taking the race head on and being in the mix from the off. Countless break away attempts were made throughout the 50km race, including efforts from all of our riders but attacks it wasn’t until 10 laps to go that the decisive move was made.  A group of 7 riders formed, including RST’s Dan Storey, and due to the fact that they worked so well into the strong headwind sections they were able to establish a 15 second lead over the main bunch. The race was by no means over, the group of 7 had to work exceptionally hard right up to the last lap before they were able think about the finish. The rest of the RST rider’s played a key role in making life difficult for any riders from the main bunch to give chase. Which helped the break stay away. With 800 meters to go, Herbalife’s Jamie Shirlaw put in the race winning attack. Having missed this move Dan waited until the final chicane before he kicked for the line, and was rewarded with 3rd place. Tom also put in a great sprint thanks to a strong lead out from Gunnar to come in 10th. With this being the second race ridden together as a team, the RST senior A team showed great initiative and tactical nous which put a lot of riders on the back foot, proving that RST racing team mean business for the 2012 road season.

3rd / 4th cat race

RST Junior rider Josh Cutler and our newest member Ryan Bell lined up with around 100 other riders which was always going to make this a very nervous race. Josh set out in a very focussed mood and kept himself in the top 20 away from any trouble but at half distance things took a turn for the worse as the rider in front switched taking Josh down which cause an almighty crash with several riders running over Josh or landing on top. Unfortunately for Josh one rider tried to bunny hop him but landed on his bike breaking his brand new Trigon RQC-29.

Youth A race

Having taken a win already this year Struan McInnes lined up alongside team mate Joey Walker to see what they could do in their first outing of the season together. Both riders were very active at the front of the bunch but unfortunately both missed the decisive attack from Harry Crew with a few laps to go. As Harry raced towards his first win of the season the RST riders jostled in the bunch for the sprint finish. Joey tried an ambitious early attack to the sprint with over 200 metres to go but was overhauled by 3 riders with 50metres to go putting him in 5th position at the finish with Struan coming home 9th

Next race for senior team is- CDNW round 3, Cockermouth and Barkston Criterium for the Youth Team
