Birdwell Wheelers 39th 10-mile TT (31/3)

The race took place at Hatfield Woodhouse with one of the biggest fields in recent times for this course with an impressive start list of 103 riders. After a week of fantastic warm weather the temperatures dropped again on the race day and the conditions was cold and windy.

The course was of the straight out – and back format with an unusual shaped roundabout as the turning point which proved to be an easy one to overcook. The first five miles went almost dead south to the turn and was very fast thanks to the northern breeze but once turning around into the headwind the real challenge began for the riders.

Gunnar started of early in the field as number 25 and finished with a time of 20.58 which put the first man home, Dan Barnett (21.51) down to second place. After a long afternoon of waiting it stood clear that no one would beat Gun’s time and in the end he won 18 seconds before Seth Kay (Datateam Allstars) and 30 seconds before 3rd man Anthony Nash  (Scunthorpe Poly).

I had a big training week before today and I was a bit unsure of whether I had enough time to recover before the weekend. Once warming up I felt OK and I think I rode a smart race where I paced myself a bit on the first half before putting in the real effort on the headwind section back to the finish. I had a great time today and it´s always nice to be able to win. The race today has also been a good way to prepare for the road race tomorrow and I also got some more valuable time on my time trail bike before the Buxton mountain TT on good Friday” says Gunnar.
