Another RST RT National Champion!!

Our man on form Tom Stewart took himself to another level when he bagged himself his biggest win to date at the National University Road Race Championship taking some very high profile scalps on his way. Here is Tom’s take on how things panned out on his perfect day

I’ve never ridden the BUCS Champs before but had a feeling it would be a weird race to read from the start. I’ve done other BUCS events before and you can get a real mix of abilities at them, but its not always easy to tell who are the ones to watch.

The 112km race on a rolling course in Leicestershire had a sharp climb 150m before the finish. The race started steady with all the favourites relaxing. There was attacking but nothing that would stick. I had a laugh with Tom Last and Jake Hales of IG-Sigma Sport. Any time either of them went near the front with a giant ‘S’ on their backs they were marked to death. Neither of them were going anywhere anytime soon. Each lap up the climb those feeling good would really press on, and this would slowly whittle the group down bit by bit. Jamie Shirlaw (Herbal Life) did get in a move early on and the group had to chase hard for a couple of laps to bring him back. He’s a strong guy but with only two others for company he couldn’t make it stick.

With 2 laps remaining the front group consisted of about 25 riders and along the back of the course on the penultimate lap Jamie Caldwell attacked with one other. The group hesitated for a minute and the pair built a sizable lead. Going up the climb on the 2nd to last lap Jamie pulled away from his breakaway companion and put a lone bid in for home. It was a really courageous move with just over 13 miles remaining. Over the rolling back straight Shirlaw attacked what was left of the group and myself, Jake Hales and one other rider went with him. We forced a gap but the group behind chased hard, with several of the favourites realising the danger. With Caldwell up the road I was able miss the odd turn, although I still worked plenty to make sure our group of four wasn’t caught.

With 3 miles to go we caught Caldwell though he managed to stay with us and even did a lot of work to help me and the others stay away. As we hit the bottom of the climb it was Shirlaw, Hales and myself who would fight the finish. The foot of the climb drags and we continued to work together here weary of the chasing group behind. As the climb got steeper I kicked and Jake Hales stayed with me. Over the top he pulled alongside and we sprinted the final 150m for the line. I got the better of Hales on the day and managed to pull out a gap of a few bike lengths to cross the line with my arms up a happy guy.

2012 British University Road Race Champion has a certain ring to it and I’m thrilled to have been able to take the win!

Congratulations Tom from all of your very proud team mates and keep up the good work!
